What makes our gut healthy?
Finding the right balance of gut microbes is like cultivating a thriving, harmonious garden. It’s not just about having enough microbes, it’s about the right mix of species working together. Most of these microbes enter our system through our environment and the foods we eat.
Often, it’s not a shortage of microbes causing issues, but rather an overgrowth of the wrong ones, or even too much of the beneficial ones, throwing things out of balance. Yes, even too much of a good thing can be disruptive.
Your Gut is a Garden
Stick with us. If you’re still wrapping your head around all the different ‘biotics’, think of your gut like a garden. A vibrant, lush oasis teeming with bacteria and tiny creatures. Now think of each ‘biotic’ like this:
What are probiotics?
Probiotics = Seeds
Think of probiotics like the seeds you plant in your garden. They introduce beneficial bacteria into your gut, but these “seeds” often don’t stick around—they’re transient. While probiotics can help for a short time, they don’t always grow into a permanent part of your gut ecosystem. Plus, some strains might produce unwanted byproducts, like histamines, which can cause problems in sensitive individuals.
What are prebiotics?
Prebiotics = Fertiliser
Think of prebiotics as the garden's fertiliser. They feed bacteria in your gut, but the problem is they feed everything—both the good and the bad. If not carefully managed, prebiotics can lead to an overgrowth of “good” bacteria that produce too many metabolites, throwing off the balance in your gut. So, while prebiotics can be helpful, they sometimes do more harm than good.
What are synbiotics?
Synbiotics = Seed + Fertiliser
Think of synbiotics as a mixture of probiotics (seeds) and prebiotics (fertiliser), hoping to achieve the best of both worlds. However, this combination doesn’t always solve the problem—it still risks feeding harmful bacteria or causing an overgrowth of certain species. Synbiotics aim for balance but don’t always hit the mark, as they depend on your unique gut environment.
What are Modbiotics®?
Modbiotics® = The Careful Gardener
Modbiotics® are the trusted careful gardener, they feed the “plants” (good bacteria) while killing the “weeds” (harmful bacteria) while keeping everything in between in balance. Derived from natural polyphenols, Modbiotics® work smarter, not harder—ensuring your gut stays balanced and your digestive system runs smoothly.
Modbiotics® Reduce, Promote & Balancing
The GutRight® Modbiotic® compound has been clinically proven to support a balanced gut microbiome. Let’s dive into the details of the specific bacteria it’s been proven to regulate.
⬇️ Reduces Klebsiella species[1] which can:
Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kp) is a resilient pathogen linked to pneumonia, UTIs, and serious systemic infections[5], often thriving in individuals with compromised health or specific medication use. Suppressing Kp growth can reduce LPS production, and thus:
- Promote healthy gut lining
- Reduce inflammation in the gut
- Reduce risk of leaky gut and food intolerances
⬇️ Reduces Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-producing bacteria[1], which can
- Reduce inflammation in the gut
- Support healing of the gut
- Reduce the risk of food intolerances
⬇️ Reduces Escherichia coli (E. coli)[1]
E. coli is a common inhabitant of the gut although present at low abundance compared to other gut microbiome species. Reducing E. coli in the gut can:
- Improve digestive comfort
- Reduce gastrointestinal inflammation
- Enhanced nutrient absorption
- Lower the risk of infections
⬇️ Reduces Clostridia Perfringens[1]
C. perfringens is one of the most common causes of food poisoning and can be found on raw meat and poultry, but also in the environment. If their presence is significant enough it may lead to symptoms of:
- Diarrhoea
- Cramping
- Bloating
- Nausea
⬇️ Reduces Trimethylamine (TMAO)-producing bacteria[1]
Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a small colorless amine oxide that accumulates in the tissues of fish in high concentrations to help protect against the protein-destabilizing effects of urea. Reducing TMAO can:
- Support healthy cardiovascular function
- Support healthy blood sugar regulation
- Reduce the risk of heart disease[2]
⬆️ Promotes Butyrate-producing species[1]
Butyrate or butyric acid is a short-chain fatty acid that is produced when certain species of bacteria break down or ferment fiber in your large intestine. Promoting Butyrate production can:
- Support healthy gut function[3]
- Support metabolic health[4]
⬆️Promotes Oxalate-consuming species[1]
Oxalates are found in many types of plant-based foods but are generally excreted from the body or broken down by gut bacteria. If either of these processes are compromised, oxalates can be absorbed from the gut into the bloodstream. Supporting oxalate-consuming species can:
- Support healthy oxalate degradation in the gut
- Reduce risk of oxalate stone formation in the body
- Support healthy mineral levels in the body
⬆️Promotes Bifidobacterium species[1]
Bifidobacterium is a highly beneficial strain found naturally in the gut. Promoting Bifidobacteria growth can:
- Promote a healthy gut lining
- Promote healthy immune function
- Promote healthy blood sugar and weight regulation
⬇️⬆️Balances Alistipes putredinis[1]
Alistipes putredinis is a normal inhabitant of the gut and part of the Bacteroidetesphylum. Both low and high levels are associated with poor intestinal health making this a species best kept in balance. Balancing Alistipes putredinis may:
- Reduce risk of inflammatory conditions
- Reduce risk of gut dysbiosis
- Increase microbial diversity
- Reduce risk of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
